AISI 4340 alloy steel is a heat-treatable low-alloy steel containing chromium, nickel and molybdenum. It has high toughness and strength in the heat treated state.

SAE 4340 steel is usually delivered in two states, namely pre-hardened state (quenched and tempered) and annealed state.

In the pre-hardened state, SAE 4340 has good strength, toughness, fatigue resistance and impact toughness. The pre-hardened hardness of SAE 4340 steel is usually controlled between 28-34HRC. In the annealed state, the surface hardness of SAE 4340 steel is usually lower than 229HB and is easy to machine.
SAE 4340 steel is a low-alloy high-strength steel type under the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards.

Heat Treatment AISI 4340 alloy bars are heat treated at 830°C (1525°F) and then quenched in oil.

Forged AISI 4340 alloy steel bars are forged at temperatures from 427 to 1233°C (1800 to 2250°F).

Cold working AISI 4340 alloy steel bars can be cold worked in the annealed condition.
AISI 4340 alloy steel bars have high ductility.

AISI 4340 alloy steel bars are annealed at 844°C (1550°F) and then furnace cooled.

AISI 4340 alloy steel bars should be in heat treatment or normalizing heat treatment state before tempering. Tempering temperature depends on the required strength level.

AISI 4340 alloy steel bars can be hardened by cold working or heat treatment.

• Normalizing temperature: 850-900℃
• Heating time: It depends on the workpiece size and load capacity. If the time is too long, the grains will become coarse, which will eventually affect the material properties.
• Cooling method: air cooling. Rapid cooling can also be achieved by spraying water mist. It should be noted that it is not advisable to cool too quickly because it may easily cause cracks in the material.
• In our experience, SAE 4340 steel requires normalizing heat treatment. Generally, it is to prepare for the final heat treatment to optimize the structure, so as to ensure the final performance of the material.
• Another situation is that the cross-section size of the SAE 4340 raw material is large and requires normalizing heat treatment to refine the grains in order to determine the direction for the next step.
• SAE 4340 Alloy Steel Bar Annealed
• SAE 4340 steel can be delivered in the annealed condition. It is widely used in actual production, and its methods can also be said to be diverse. Commonly used annealing methods are generally divided into the following categories.
• Complete annealing (recrystallization annealing): 830-850℃, hardness below 200HB.
• Isothermal annealing: 650℃, heat preservation for 8 hours, hardness below 229HB.
• Soft annealing: 670-700℃, hardness below 248HB.
• Stress relief annealing: 600-650℃
• The above annealing methods each have their own effects, and the final cooling method is furnace cooling.
• SAE 4340 Alloy Steel Bar Quenched and Tempered (QT)
• Quenching and tempering heat treatment is very suitable for SAE 4340 steel itself to undergo significant performance changes. After QT treatment, SAE 4340 steel can obtain high strength and hardness without losing toughness, and has extremely high application value.
• Quenching temperature: 850-870°C
• Quenching medium: water/oil
• Quenching hardness: 55-59HRC
• Tempering temperature: 550-650℃
• Tempering hardness: 28-32HRC
