Chrome-molybdenum steel is a type of alloy steel, commonly known as chrome-molybdenum. The main alloying elements are two elements, Cr and Mo. It has a wide range of uses, especially in the oil and gas industry, the nuclear industry and fossil fuel power plants. Molybdenum has higher strength and higher operating temperatures, while chromium improves corrosion and oxidation resistance.
Because Chromoly steel has such high tensile strength and corrosion resistance at high temperatures, it is ideal for saltwater applications. Chromoly is stronger than standard stainless steel and has a high strength-to-weight ratio.
Chromoly steel is also weldable, formable, and ductile, and its welding techniques are very similar to stainless steel
Chromoly steel has excellent hardenability and high toughness, making it easy to weld and fabricate. Due to the excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance provided by the chromium content, chromium-molybdenum steel resists hot sulfide corrosion, hydrogen attack, and embrittlement. The molybdenum content means that it maintains high strength even at high temperatures.
Chromoly steel is often used in high-end bicycle frames, making them lighter and more flexible than standard steel. Due to its light weight yet high strength, it is also used in the fuselages of small aircraft and roll cages for racing cars
